Obituary for Todd Stewart

Todd “Tank” Stewart, 62, passed away on December 19, 2021, at home surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy by loving with all of their hearts and living their lives to the fullest.

Todd was born on March 25, 1959, to Bill and Sally Stewart, and graduated from high school in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Todd attended Vanderbilt University on a full Navy ROTC scholarship, where he majored in Russian. After receiving his commission into the Marine Corps as a Second Lieutenant, Todd began chasing his dream of becoming a life-long pilot by earning the title of a Naval Aviator and flew F-4 Phantoms while serving in the Marine Corps. Todd later went on to fly F-14 Tomcats, wherein he flew numerous combat missions serving his country with distinction in Desert Storm. To no one’s surprise, he attended the premier of the 1986 film “Top Gun” in his fighter pilot jacket.

After retiring from the Navy Reserves as a Lieutenant Commander, Todd went on to fly various aircraft as a Flight Engineer, First Officer, and Captain for FedEx, where he was employed for 25 years. His first flight ever was in a T-34C on February 18, 1982, and his last flight was in an Airbus A-300 on September 8, 2021. He spent his entire adult life living his dream of flying airplanes, all while raising a family and showing his sons how to treat their wives like they are the best things that ever happened to them.

Todd met the love of his life and his best friend, Patti, while learning how to fly in Meridian, Mississippi. Together they had two boys, William Todd Stewart and Robert Joseph Stewart, whom Todd and Patti raised into good men. When not flying, Todd’s life was spent enhancing the lives of everyone he came in contact with, spoiling his wife and grandchildren, and having more fun than most college students on their weekends.

Todd is survived by his wife, Patti, his two sons, Bill and Robbie, his mother, Sally, his two sisters, Sarah and Kathy, and his six grandchildren who adoringly referred to him as his Navy callsign, “Tank”, and who are convinced that Tank is currently serving as the Grill Master in Heaven.

Todd will be remembered as a loving husband and father, a smart, witty, reliable friend, and the one person we could always rely on during our own trials and tribulations. He lived his life to the fullest, treated his wife like a queen, and enriched the lives of everyone he came to know. Though he may be gone, and our hearts broken, he will never be forgotten.

A memorial service will be held in January 2022 and arrangements are currently being coordinated. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask you to please donate to either the Wounded Warrior Foundation or the Gary Sinise Foundation.
