Obituary for Larry Watson Sumners

Larry Watson Sumners passed peacefully in his sleep on Monday, November 8, 2021, at the age of 70, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, Mississippi.

Larry was born in Calhoun City, Mississippi, in 1951. After graduating from Calhoun City High School, he attended college at the University of Southern Mississippi, and later entered the United States Air Force. While in the service, he met his future wife of nearly 50 years, Marianne, in London, England. The young couple eventually moved back to the states, where they married in 1974 and later had their daughter, Kathleen. Larry spent several happy years working as an airplane mechanic after leaving the service, but eventually ended up starting his own family business in Oxford, Mississippi, which he ran for almost 30 years before retiring in 2010. He spent his retirement doing what he enjoyed best...fixing up his 1950's trucks, riding his motorcycle, tending the garden, and walking the beagle.

Larry is survived by his wife, Marianne Sau Wan Sumners, his daughter, Kathleen May Li Sumners (CDR C.M. Posey, USN Ret.), his sister, Patricia S. Drake (James "Duck" Drake), his sister-in-law Sharon Sumners, two nieces, Heather Purdy and Melanie G. Dozier, nephew Harold Sumners III, and two grand-nephews, Jackson and Finn Purdy. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Harold V. Sumners and Addie Rhew Sumners, and his brother, Harold V. Sumners Jr.

Always there whenever anyone needed a hand, Larry was definitely one to quietly pay it forward. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a good cause in his memory...or just help the next person who asks. Thank you for reading, and for keeping our Larry in your hearts.
